Located in Quiche, Chichi contains enormous cultural and traditional riches. Here you will appreciate the most famous colorful open-air market in Guatemala. In Chichi, the indigenous Maya of the highlands sell their products and traditional handy crafts. The market is open only on Thursday and Sunday. Here the Maya decedents share with their friends, and worships the Catholic saints and their ancient's gods at the steps of the church of Santo Tomas. The nearby Pascual Abaj hill is a place where they make offerings and ask their gods for favor through different ceremonial rites. This is also a great opportunity to acquire famous Guatemala textiles and many souvenirs. Come and visit Chichicastenango and you will not be disappointed. Pascual Abaj Hill: Just a 15 or 25 minute walk from the church of Santo Tomas is the nearby Pascual Abaj hill. On the hill top is Pascual Abaj, who is represented by, a deity of stone that blends Spanish Catholicism and ancient Maya rituals. Almost every day, shamans and priestesses are there performing ceremonies. People travel there for many reasons: to bless a marriage, to pray for a good harvest or to give thanks for a good harvest, or to remedy a problem. The "aj'itz" Mayan shaman conducts the rites. The hill is also a nature area with walking paths, forests, beautiful landscapes, wildlife, a variety of birds and plenty of grounds for recreation. In this place, the locals offer gifts such as flowers, food, drinks, incense. |
