Capital Tour

Guatemala City was established in 1776. It is the fourth location for the capital of
Guatemala. The city is divided in 21 zones. The altitude is 1500 meters above sea level or
approximately 4,900 feet. In zone 1 is the old historic center. The Mayor Plaza in Guatemala
City is the historic heart. It's surrounded by important monuments. Among them is the
Original Palace which today is a museum called the "National Palace of Culture". The
Mayor Plaza is also surrounded by the Cathedral Metropolitan, the Portal of Commerce and
Centennial Park. South of Zone 1 is Zone 4 where many of the new official buildings are
located like the national bank, the national theatre, the tourist board (INGUAT). Further
south is Zone 10 and Zone 9, divided by Avenida La Reforma. Zone 10 hosts most of the
high-class hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping and facilities. A small part of Zone 10 is
called Zone Viva (the lively zone) because of its nightlife. Guatemala City offers many
attractions and among them are: Archaeological site of Caminaljuyu, Plaza Mayor which
includes the National Palace, the Civic Center, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Relieve Map,
Carlos F Novela Museum, Railroad Museum, Museum Ixchel del Traje Indígena, Natural
Museum of Ethnology and Archaeology, National Museum of Natural History and many
others.
